Florence takes series after tempers flare in 6-4 loss for Washington

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington Wild Things (8-6) dropped game two, and the series, to the Florence Freedom (11-3) by a score of 6-4 Saturday night.

Left-handed pitcher Hunter Williams started for the Wild Things and managed to go 4.1 innings while allowing two runs on four hits, but struggled with command in the outing, walking a season-high five batters in the game.

Florence started the scoring in the game in the top of the fourth when infielder Austin Wobrock walked with the bases loaded to make it 1-0 before infielder Mike Morris singled home a run as well to give Florence a 2-0 lead after four-and-a-half innings. In the bottom of the frame, right fielder Hector Roa and shortstop Alexander Fernandez both singledin runs to tie the game at two after four innings.

While Wild Things Park has fireworks on Friday home games, the players on the field provided fireworks of their own during the second game of the series, when in the fifth inning third basemen Mike Hill was hit by a pitch, sparking a confrontation between him and Florence catcher Garrett Vail. Both players were ejected during the brawl, and the Wild Things gained momentum, scoring two runs in the inning off a two-RBI single by Kane Sweeney to take the lead 4-2.

However, Florence scored four unanswered runs throughout the remainder of the game to secure a 6-4 over Washington. Third basemen Jose Brizuela stood out for the Freedom, going 2-5 with a two RBI single in the sixth that gave the Freedom the go-ahead run.

The two teams play the third game of the weekend set tomorrow evening, Sunday, May 28, with a scheduled first pitch at 5:05 p.m. The Wild Things look to avoid being swept tomorrow for the second time in the young, 2017 campaign.
