Wild Things Drop Series Opener in Joliet

WASHINGTON, Pa., May 30 – The Washington Wild Things (9-7) and Joliet Slammers (5-11) opened a three-game series in Joliet, Illinois, this evening with the host Slammers edging out the Wild Things, 6-3.

Washington opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when outfielder Hector Roa scored on a sacrifice fly by Kenny Peoples-Walls.

Joliet scored its first three runs in the third inning, after starting pitcher Trevor Foss had retired the first 10 Joliet batters he faced. Ultimately, an error by the Wild Things with one out caused things to spin slightly out of control, as three unearned runs crossed for the host team, giving it a 3-1 lead. Foss surrendered three more runs in the sixth before exiting the game and being tagged with the loss.

The Wild Things made things interesting in the visitor’s ninth. A five-pitch walk to catcher Kyle Pollock got things started before a strikeout of Trevin Sonnier put the Washington hopes of a comeback in the hands of outfielder Rashad Brown. Brown singled to put runners on the corners, before advancing to second base of defensive indifference. Second baseman Alexander Fernandez hit a book-rule double to score Brown and Pollock before Kane Sweeney eventually flew out to end the game.

Roa and Brown both had multi-hit games, while four other Wild Things notched hits.

Washington will get another chance at the Slammers tomorrow night in Joliet, with a scheduled first pitch of 8:05 p.m.
