Wild Things Avoid Sweep in Florence With 9-4 Victory

WASHNGTON, Pa. – The Washington Wild Things (14-13) defeated the Florence Freedom (18-9) 9-4 to avoid the series sweep Sunday in Florence, Kentucky.

The Wild Things got on the board first with an RBI, book-rule double by catcher John Fidanza plating third baseman Kenny Peoples-Walls in the second inning. Washington added on another run as shortstop Mike Hill drove in second baseman Alex Fernandez, after Fernandez reached on a two-base error to lead off the third inning.

In the bottom of the third, Freedom right fielder Collins Cuthrell hit a bases-loaded, two-run single to tie the game, and then the Freedom took the lead off another RBI single later in the inning.

Washington answered in the top of the next frame as Fernandez hit a three-run home run, putting the the Wild Things up 5-3.

Left fielder Bralin Jackson was then able to add some cushion with a solo shot, followed by two more runs scored after designated hitter Kyle Pollock walked with the bases loaded walk and a Peoples-Walls sacrifice fly, pushing the lead to 8-3 heading into the seventh-inning stretch.

In the eighth, Pollock got his second RBI of the game as he singled in Fernandez to extend the lead to 9-3.

The Freedom attempted a two-out rally in their last turn at the plate, scoring a run off a base knock. This would prove to be the last run of the game, as the Wild Things would pull out a win in their last game of the road trip, 9-4.

Chase Cunningham got the win for the Wild Things after tossing six innings of three-run ball. In the quality start, Cunningham walked three and struck out five. The losing pitcher was Zach Wendorf, who threw 3.2 innings and surrendered five runs on six hits and walked four Wild Things.

The Wild Things will be back in action of Wednesday, June 14 with a home double-header against the River City Rascals. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
