Washington Signs Starting Pitcher to Bolster Rotation

WASHINGTON, Pa., June 17 - With the starting pitcher yet to be announced for tonight’s game against the Evansville Otters, the Washington Wild Things have found that starter, by signing 22-year old right-hander Cameron Stanton.

Stanton comes to the Wild Things from the Atlantic League in 2017, where he pitched 5.2 innings for the Sugar Land Skeeters this season and gave up four runs and walked six out of the bullpen. Stanton was drafted in the 30th round of the 2016 draft by the Atlanta Braves and spent the 2016 summer with the organization, pitching his way to a 2.57 earned run average in 14 appearances totaling 35 innings.

The right-hander made his name as a pitcher at St. Edwards University, which is a DII school that competes in the Hearltand Conference. In 34 appearances (31 starts) in his final two years combined with the Hilltoppers, Stanton was 18-2 in 188.1 innings and struck out 156 batters to just 40 walks.

Cameron is the son of 19-year MLB vet Mike Stanton, who pitched for three World Series Championship teams in his 19 seasons in the bigs and made an All-Star team in 2001. In his career, Mike pitched more than 1100 innings and had a career ERA of 3.92.

Cameron Stanton will start tonight’s game for the Wild Things.

The Wild Things host the Evansville Otters tonight at 7:05 for the second of the weekend set following a 5-2 victory Friday night.
