SCHAUMBURG, Il. – The Washington Wild Things (21-17) won the series against the Schaumburg Boomers (28-11) Sunday afternoon by winning the rubber match 6-2 on the back of stellar pitching from the starter and good offensive output in the middle innings.

Trevor Foss (5-3) got the win with his start on the mound, going six innings and allowing only one run on six hits while also striking out four batters. The highlight of his performance came in the sixth inning, when he loaded the bases with only one out, and was able to set the next two batters down in order to escape unscathed.

The Boomers struck first on a solo home run from left fielder Kyle Ruchim in the bottom of the third inning. In the top of the fifth, the Wild Things were able to tie and then take the lead off back-to-back RBI doubles from third baseman Mike Hill and catcher John Fidanza, putting Washington up 2-1 heading into the bottom frame. The Wild Things were then able to add some insurance runs in the top of the sixth as four players scored, highlighted by a Hector Roa triple and a two-run homer from Mike Hill, extending the lead to 6-1. All the runs scored in the top of the sixth occurred with no outs recorded.

Schaumburg started to work its way back into the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as Ryan O’Malley hit an RBI single, reducing the deficit to 6-2 heading into the final inning. This would prove to be the final run as Zach Strecker shut the door out of the bullpen, earning the four-out save to end the game.

The Wild Things next game is at home against the Traverse City Beach Bums on Tuesday, June 27. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
