Washington Wins in Comeback Fashion for 15th Time in 2017

NORMAL, Ill. – The Washington Wild Things (27-19) defeated the Normal CornBelters (23-24) 6-2 in game two of their three-game series on Wednesday, July 5. Trevor Foss earned a complete game victory as he only allowed two runs (one earned) on just six hits while adding four strikeouts. The Wild Things also won in comeback fashion for the 15th time in 2017.

The CornBelters struck first in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs on three hits including singles from Nolan Meadows and Justin Fletcher.

The Wild Things were able to get men on base consistently, but were unable to bring any runs around to score through the first seven innings, keeping the score at 2-0 in favor of the CornBelters. In the eighth, the comeback was on as all nine Wild Things batters came to the plate in the inning. Catcher John Fidanza walked to lead things off and then centerfielder Rashad Brown advanced him to third on a single in the next at-bat. Shortstop Justin Bohn then scored Fidanza and advanced Brown to third with the second single of the inning. Brown would score on a ground-out, tying the game.

After Kane Sweeney got out, right fielder Hector Roa was able to get the Wild Things their first lead of the game with a book-rule double that scored Bohn. The scoring wasn’t over yet, however, as third baseman Mike Hill then launched a two-run homer over the wall to put the Wild Things up 5-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

In the top of the ninth, Fidanza was plated once again as Bohn reached on a two-out error, putting the lead up to four. This would prove to be the final as Foss set the CornBelters down in order in their last chance at the plate.

The Wild Things look to win the series in a rubber match tomorrow night, starting at 7:35 p.m. EST as Cameron Stanton takes the mound for Washington. If the Wild Things win, it will be the sixth-consecutive series Washington has won.
