Washington Drops Series in Joliet with 5-2 Loss Sunday

JOLIET, Ill. – The Washington Wild Things (40-37) fell to the Joliet Slammers (34-42) 5-2 in the rubber match of the three-game, weekend series, Sunday. Trevor Bradley (2-2) started on the mound for the Wild Things, going 3.2 innings while allowing two runs and striking out four in the loss.
The offensive showing kicked off early as the first two batters for Washington reached base safely by way of a walk and a single before an errant pickoff throw allowed right fielder James Harris to score. The Slammers answered in the bottom frame with three hits, all of which came with two outs, to score a run and tie the game.
After a scoreless second, Joliet took the lead as right fielder Ridge Hoopii-Haslam reached on a double and then was brought around to score on a single from third baseman Danny Zardon. The Slammers were then able to add some cushion in the bottom of the fifth when a double from Zardon pushed first baseman Edwin Gomez to third, and then an errant throw from right field scored both Gomez and Zardon, putting the tally at 4-1.
Designated hitter Hector Roa and third baseman Kenny Peoples-Walls teamed up to get a run back for the Wild Things in the top of the sixth as Roa reached with his team leading sixth triple of the year and then was brought around to score on a base knock from Peoples-Walls. Joliet got this run back quickly however as they walked in a run with bases loaded in the bottom half, pushing the leading to three, 5-2.
Washington has a day break before they face Schaumburg on Tuesday. The first pitch at Boomers Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m.
