Wild Things Drop Finale in Schaumburg But Win Series, Stay in the Thick of Wild-Card Race

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – The Washington Wild Things (42-38) fell to the Schaumburg Boomers (53-25) tonight in the series finale, by a score of 8-2. Despite the loss, the Wild Things remain in the thick of things in the Frontier League playoff race, after winning the series in Schaumburg.

Aaron Burns (4-2) started on the bump for Washington, going 4.1 innings of six-run baseball while striking out four batters. Only four of the six runs charged to Burns were earned.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, shortstop Mike Hill attempted to start an inning-ending double play on a groundball from right fielder David Harris, but instead threw the ball wide of the second baseman. This error allowed all three runners to score, as well as the batter to advance to second on the play. Harris would then come in to score on a fielder’s choice later in the inning, putting the Boomers up 4-0.

Wild Things catcher Kyle Pollock looked to start a rally as he doubled in his next at-bat, and then was brought around to score as third baseman Kenny Peoples-Walls picked up his 11th RBI of the series, this time coming on a base hit, to cut the deficit to three.

Schaumburg started to widen the margin in the bottom of the fifth as it loaded the bases with one out to chase Aaron Burns out of the game. He was relieved by Cameron Stanton, who allowed a single that plated two runners to the first batter he faced, pushing the lead to five. After the seventh-inning stretch, the Boomers added a couple more as centerfielder Sean Godfrey launched a two-run homer, his eighth of the season.

Washington shortstop Mike Hill answered with a home run of his own to lead off the ninth inning, but that’s all the Wild Things could muster in their final chance, as they fell 8-2.

The Wild Things will return to Washington for a six-game homestand, starting with a three-game, weekend series against the Joliet Slammers with game one slated to begin tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. For updates on the standings, visit our social media platforms and frontierleague.com
