WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington Wild Things (50-42) completed the sweep of the Joliet Slammers (41-52) with a 15-5 whitewashing at Wild Things Park Thursday night. The win keeps the Wild Things in control of a wild-card spot, as they get ready to head to Traverse City for the last four games of the regular season.

The Wild Things scored three runs in the first, one in the second, five in the fourth, three in the fifth and three in the eighth to get to 15 runs on 21 hits against four separate Joliet pitchers. Andrew Zellner took the loss for the Slammers, as he started the game and yielded four runs on five hits in just two innings. Four walks did not help his cause.

For Washington, Tyler Garkow got the victory, as he went seven innings of seven-hit, three-run ball with five strikeouts before being relieved in the eighth inning of the game. Trevor Bradley pitched a scoreless inning and had a punchout, before Frank Trimarco was tagged for two runs en route to closing the game out, after entering with a 12-run lead.

The Wild Things got contributions from everybody in the lineup with the exception of one player. Five Wild Things had three hits: first baseman Kane Sweeney, designated hitter James Harrs, left fielder Bralin Jackson, right fielder Hector Roa and catcher Kyle Pollock. Pollock, Roa and Jackson all drove in three runs, while first baseman Kane Sweeney had two RBI. Kyle Reese, who came on as a substitution in the game, hit a home run as a pinch-hitter, and was joined in the home run department by Kyle Pollock, who hit his 11th home run of the season earlier in the game.

Washington now gets set to head to Traverse City for four games starting tomorrow, Friday, September 1, with a playoff spot up for grabs over the weekend. At the time of this release, the Wild Things trailed the first wild-card spot by a game, but could be a half game back if Normal has held on to beat Evansville. They are a half game up still on Windy City, as the ThunderBolts won 4-0 at Lake Erie.

Chase Cunningham will take the hill in gme one versus Traverse, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Updates on the wild-card race and games will be available on the team’s Facebook and Twitter pages all weekend long.
