Wild Things Ink Catcher, Former Wofford Standout to Deal for 2018

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington Wild Things announced today that another addition has been made to the roster, with the signing of a catcher, Carson Waln, who recently graduated from Wofford College, where he played four seasons of collegiate baseball.

Waln, a 22-year old from Atlanta, Georgia, matriculated to Wofford from The Galloway School, where he studied and played his high school career. Over the course of his career at Wofford, Waln showed an ability to defend at the catcher position, as well as an ability to impact games offensively, which stood out to the Wild Things.

“We are very excited to add Carson to our 2018 roster. Catchers who can limit the running game are extremely hard to find," said general manager Steven Zavacky. "Not only has Carson shown an aptitude to defend at a high level but he also has contributed offensively and on the bases throughout his college career at Wofford.”

After getting just 44 at bats during his freshman season, Waln's playing time increased, and with it, his production increased. In his sophomore season (2015), Waln had arguably his best collegiate season, especially at the plate. He had a batting average of .335 and an on-base percentage of .429 that season, all while driving in 32 runs and swiping 17 bags.

In 2017, Waln hit .300 with an OBP of .389 and a slugging percentage of .471. His power was on display as a senior as well, as Waln blasted five home runs and drove in 34 runs. Entering his senior season, Waln had not hit a home run at the collegiate level. He had a successful season on the base paths too, as he stole 16 bases on 20 attempts.

For his Wofford career, Waln hit .285 with an on-base percentage of .377. Waln played three seasons with the Terriers alongside 2017 Wild Things' pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan.

Waln is excited for the opportunity.

"Playing professional baseball has always been a dream of mine, so this opportunity is one I am incredibly grateful for," said Waln. "I cannot wait to get with the team and start competing, and I am ecstatic to be joining such a well-run organization."

He'll be joining a team with players he knows share the same goals.

"My goal is to give 100% and help the team win every day. I take pride in working hard and trying to win each pitch, and I know the guys I will be playing with do the same."
