O’FALLON, Mo. (July 21) - The Washington Wild Things were unable to get win tonight despite being up early in the contest, 5-0. The offense came alive in the early innings but struggled to come back later in the game which resulted in 7-6 River City victory.

Washington (32-27) struck first in the first inning when catcher Kyle Pollock was able to knock in center fielder James Harris to make it 1-0. The Wild Things extended their lead soon after when right fielder Hector Roa plated two more runs with a single scoring Pollock and second baseman Carter McEachern.

In the top of the third Washington tacked on another two runs, one on an error by River City left fielder Kevin Suaurez allowing Roman Collins to score. The second run came from a sacrifice fly by first baseman Reydel Medina that scored Pollock.

In the bottom half of the frame River City (31-28) started their comeback when right fielder Zach Lavy belted a three-run shot to make it 5-3 in favor of Washington.

River City continued the comeback in the fourth inning and made it a one-run game after designated hitter Paul Kronenfeld hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored second baseman Trevor Achenbach.

The sixth inning saw the Rascals take the lead with a two-run blast by Kronenfeld and solo shot by catcher Mike Jurgella to make it 7-5.

Washington started a comeback of their own and cut the lead to one run in the seventh inning off an RBI single by Pollock.

In the eighth inning the Wild Things were presented with a good opportunity to take the lead when newly acquired third baseman Ryan Cox recorded his first professional hit and was pushed to second on a single by short stop Brett Marr. With two on and two out James Harris was brought to the plate but was not able to drive any runs in.

Washington’s comeback was limited to just one run as the ninth inning yielded a similar result as the eighth and River City came out on top 7-6.

Washington is back in action tomorrow for the rubber game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EDT.
