Washington Wins 7-3 to Sweep Series Behind Six-Run Third Inning

TRAVERSE CITY, Mi. (July 29) - The Washington Wild Things plated six runs and six hits in the top of the third inning to propel them to victory on Sunday over Traverse City 7-3. The win secured the Wild Things' sweep of the Beach Bums, their fourth sweep this season and first on the road.

The first inning featured scoreless play, but Traverse City was able to muster a run in the bottom of the second when catcher Kendall Patrick plated designated hitter Alexis Rivera on a single to give the Beach Bums a 1-0 lead.

Washington’s offense exploded in the top of the third, scoring six runs on six hits. In the inning, left fielder Roman Collins and third baseman Mike Hill had an RBI double while second baseman Carter McEachern had a three-RBI double, scoring first baseman Reydel Medina, Hill, and catcher Kyle Pollock. Designated hitter Conner Simonetti added an RBI single in the scoring outburst to put Washington up 6-1.

Both offenses went quiet in innings four and five, but Traverse City added a second run to their total in the sixth when center fielder Connor Oliver drove in first baseman Luke Lowery on an RBI double to create a 6-2 contest.

Patrick added another RBI to his credit for Traverse City in the eighth inning when he drove in Lowery on an RBI single to cut the deficit down to 6-3.

Washington would plate an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Collins drove a one-out solo home run over the right field wall to increase its lead to 7-3. The Collins homer was the final scoring play of the contest, as Washington sealed its fourth sweep of 2018 and its first on the road.

Washington starter Thomas Dorminy (8-4) earned his eighth win of the season in his 7.2-inning effort. He allowed three earned runs on 11 hits while striking out six batters and walking one.
